*Shubh* is auspiciousness — the good, the favourable, the well-omened. *Labh* is gain, profit, benefit. Together they are the standing invocation at an Indian threshold: let what enters here be auspicious, and let it prosper. They are written on either side of a doorway, on the ledgers opened at Lakshmi Puja, and above the entrance of shops on Diwali morning.

Because they are a pair and a sequence, they are placed together and in order — **Shubh on the left, Labh on the right, as you look at them.** Either side of a mandir, either side of a doorway, or together on a console near the entrance.

The **Swastik** above each arch is the older symbol of the two: in Indian usage it marks a beginning as auspicious, which is why it appears on ledgers, thresholds and foundation stones.

THE CONSTRUCTION

Each plaque is an embossed metal face wrapped over the front of a wooden base and returned down its sides, so the piece reads as solid metal from the front and shows the wood as a dark margin behind. The base is cut to the same arch profile and has a flat bottom, which is what lets each piece stand without a stand.
