The Preserved Moss — What It Is and Why It Lasts

Reindeer moss (Cladonia rangiferina) is a lichen — not a true moss — that grows in cold climates and is harvested sustainably from certified managed forests. Preservation is a process that replaces the moss's natural moisture content with glycerin and food-safe preservatives, maintaining the plant's structure, texture, and colour permanently without requiring any further biological input.

Preserved reindeer moss does not photosynthesize. It does not transpire. It does not require sunlight or water. The preservation process arrests the biological cycle at the point of maximum visual vitality — the moss stays green, three-dimensional, and alive-looking indefinitely under normal indoor conditions.

Conditions that support the longest lifespan: normal indoor ambient humidity, indirect or diffuse light, no direct air conditioning vents blowing onto the panel. Conditions that accelerate degradation: prolonged direct sunlight (UV bleaches the botanical over time), direct exposure to humidity above 85%, or environments with extreme dry heat below 20% humidity.

Under normal Indian indoor office conditions — air-conditioned spaces with ambient light — the preserved botanical maintains its appearance for 5+ years reliably.

The Acrylic Panel — Engraving and Customisation

The clear acrylic front cover is secured by four natural cork pegs at the corners of the moss panel. The cork pegs allow the acrylic to be positioned flush against the moss surface.

Customisation is applied to the acrylic panel before assembly. The engraving process creates frosted letterforms within the clear acrylic — each engraved letter appears white and opaque against the clear panel, with the green moss visible through the un-engraved zones. The visual effect is of text written directly on nature.

Available customisation content: recipient name, award title, organisation name, citation text, year, logo mark (vector artwork required), decorative dividers, and any other text content.

The MDF Frame and Base

The plaque body is constructed from MDF — a dense, smooth, precisely-machined composite that provides a consistent surface for painting and finishing. The frame zone is finished in matte black. The base is finished in warm white. The diagonal cut between the black frame and white base is a design element that creates visual separation between the botanical panel (above) and the display plinth (below).

The base is designed specifically for upright desk display — weighted sufficiently to prevent tipping and sized to occupy a minimal footprint on a desk surface.
