WHY THE BRANDING GOES UNDER THE FOOD, AND WHY THAT IS THE WHOLE ARGUMENT

Go and look at how corporate Diwali hampers are branded this year. The logo goes on the outer carton, on the ribbon, or on a gift tag tied to the handle. Every one of those three is in a bin by the weekend. The company paid for branding on the part of the gift specifically designed to be thrown away.

**The surface that survives.** This tray is the only hard, flat, unmarked surface in the hamper, and it is the one thing nobody eats. Engraved into its floor, the mark spends the first week hidden under four potlis and a box of laddus, and then slowly surfaces as the food goes. By the time the tray is empty it is a tray with a company's name burned into it, sitting on a sideboard. That is a longer impression than anything else in this band buys, and it costs nothing extra to place it there.

**Eighteen things, and every one of them weighed.** Read the specification on a competing hamper at this tier and you will find "assorted premium dry fruits" and "traditional Indian sweets". You cannot compare that to anything, which is the point of writing it that way. Ours says 100g of cashews, 100g of almonds, 100g of raisins, 100g of pista, roughly 450g of baklava, six laddus, ten chocolates, 400g of jhaal muri, 85g and 32g of savoury snack, 50g of loose leaf chai and 100g of coffee. Forward it to whoever signs off the spend and it survives the reading.

**It is a tray, not a box, and that is a decision.** A lidded box is a reveal. An open tray is an inventory — the recipient sees the whole thing at once, counts it, and knows immediately that nobody was economising. For a gift going to two hundred people who will compare theirs with the person at the next desk, being immediately and visibly generous does more work than a lift-off lid.

**Honest about the timber.** The tray is engineered MDF board with a blond timber-look surface, not solid wood. We say so because almost nobody in this category names their material, and because it is what makes the rest of this page worth believing. MDF is also the better surface for an engraving — it is dense and perfectly flat, so a laser mark comes out crisp and even, where open-grain solid timber burns unevenly along the grain.

WHAT IS IN THE FOUR POTLIS

Four separate 100g potlis rather than one mixed bag, which matters more than it sounds. A mixed 400g bag of dry fruit is mostly raisins by volume and a recipient can see that at a glance. Four sheer gold potlis, each tagged, each holding one thing — cashews, almonds, raisins, pistachios — reads as four gifts and photographs as four gifts. It is also the format people actually use: the potlis get untied and decanted into jars rather than left half-eaten in a bag.

THE CHAI AND THE COFFEE, AND THE TWO CUPS THAT COME WITH THEM

Fifty grams of loose leaf masala chai — CTC tea with ginger, cardamom, cinnamon, cloves, black pepper, star anise and nutmeg, in a glass jar that reseals rather than a foil sachet that does not. A hundred grams of 100% Arabica instant coffee in a matching jar. And two rice husk kulhads, which is the detail that makes this a gift for a pair rather than for one person. Almost every hamper in this band ships one cup or none. Two means the tea gets made for somebody.

Rice husk is milled husk bound into a composite — it is not ceramic and it will not shatter if a kulhad is knocked off a table, which is why it survives an office desk better than the terracotta original it is shaped after.

THE SWEET AND THE SAVOURY, IN THAT ORDER

The mithai half is baklava and besan laddu — layered pastry made with ghee, and six laddus of roasted gram flour. The savoury half is jhaal muri, which is puffed rice tossed with mustard oil, green chilli, peanuts and chopped onion and eaten straight from the paper cone it comes in, plus two packs of fried namkeen. Then ten handmade chocolates, a jar of kesariya mishri and a jar of mouth freshener to finish on.

That balance is deliberate. Most Diwali hampers are sweet all the way through and get set aside by the third day. Half of this one is salt, chilli and spice, which is what people actually reach for after two weeks of mithai.

THE INCENSE AND THE TORAN

Forty incense sticks and a jute toran with a lotus medallion. The toran is the piece that gets used first — it goes on the main door before the festival, and it stays up long after, which is a second thing in this hamper that outlives the food.

BRANDING ON BULK ORDERS

The tray floor takes a laser-engraved logo. It is dense flat board, so the mark comes out crisp and even, and it is burned into the surface rather than printed onto it — nothing to peel, scratch or wash off. Trays also ship completely unbranded for gifts going to family and friends. Engraving is offered on bulk orders only, because it is a set-up job and it is not worth doing for one.

WHAT WE HAVE NOT STATED, AND WHY

There is no melt or heat claim anywhere on this page, and no shelf-life figure, because we have not verified either for every line in the box. If you are ordering in volume and the delivery date is weeks out, ask us and we will confirm the best-before dates on the actual batch going into your order rather than quote you a number from a catalogue.

Returns

Hampers are not eligible for return, exchange or refund, with the single exception of a hamper that arrives damaged in transit, which must be reported to the delivery partner at the time of delivery so the claim can be raised, and engraved trays are non-returnable once produced.

Please note

Decant the four potlis into airtight jars once opened — sheer organza is a presentation bag, not a storage bag. Keep all four glass jars closed and away from steam and strong smells, which is what dulls an aromatic chai fastest. The kulhads are hand wash, not dishwasher. Wipe the tray with a dry or barely damp cloth and never soak it, because MDF board swells if it is left standing in water. Never leave burning incense unattended, and keep it away from curtains, children and pets.

ALLERGENS: this hamper contains tree nuts — cashews, almonds and pistachios — and the baklava and besan laddu contain nuts and dairy. We have not verified the cross-contamination statements for every packaged line in the box, so please check with us before sending it to anyone with a food allergy.
