there is — but because it makes a person wait four minutes, and four minutes is
enough to turn a rushed cup into a small ritual.

It is also the sort of thing people want and never get around to buying. They mean
to. Then the instant jar is right there and another month goes by. Arriving as a
gift is how most presses actually enter a house.

Two things make this one worth giving rather than any press off a shelf. The
handle is moulded as part of the glass itself, not a metal cage bolted round a
beaker — so it looks like a single considered object on a table rather than
kitchen equipment, and there is no frame with gaps for old grounds to hide in. And
the filtration runs in three stages, which is why it works properly for loose-leaf
tea, not only for coffee. That matters in an Indian kitchen where the same press
will be asked to do chai on a weekday and coffee on a Sunday.

HOW TO BREW IT

For coffee: one heaped tablespoon of coarsely ground coffee per cup. Pour water
just off the boil, around 93°C — never straight from a rolling boil, which scorches
the grounds. Stir once, put the lid on with the plunger up, wait four minutes, then
press down slowly and steadily. If it fights you, the grind is too fine.

For tea: one teaspoon of whole leaves per cup. Water temperature matters more than
people expect — around 95°C for black tea, but only 75 to 80°C for green and white,
or the leaves turn bitter and grassy. Steep for the time the leaf calls for, then
press.

For cold brew: coarse grounds, cold water, lid on, into the fridge for twelve
hours. Press in the morning.

THE ONE THING MOST PEOPLE GET WRONG

A press does not stop brewing when you press. The leaves and grounds stay in the
water underneath the filter, and they keep giving — which is why the second cup
from a press so often tastes bitter and over-extracted.

The fix is simple: pour the whole carafe out as soon as you have pressed. Into
cups, into a flask, into a second vessel — anywhere but back into contact with the
grounds. Nobody tells you this and it is the difference between a good press and a
disappointing one.

WHY THE FILTRATION MATTERS FOR TEA

Coffee is forgiving. It is ground evenly and a single coarse screen holds most of
it back. Whole tea leaves are not — they break, they shed, and fine particles slip
through a basic mesh straight into the cup, which is why so many people conclude
that tea in a press does not work.

This one puts three barriers in the way: a perforated steel plate, fine woven mesh
set into it, and a spiral mesh skirt that presses against the glass wall so
nothing escapes around the edge. There is also a slotted gate in the lid, which
catches anything that makes it that far as you pour.

THE GLASS HANDLE

Almost every press on the market is a glass beaker sitting inside a steel or
plastic cage. This one is a single glass form with the handle moulded into it.

The upside is real: nothing to unscrew, no frame with hidden gaps where old
grounds and oils collect, and an object that looks like it belongs on a dining
table rather than on a kitchen shelf.

The trade-off is equally real, and worth saying plainly: there is no cage
protecting the glass. It is more elegant and less armoured. Treat it like good
glassware rather than like equipment — and it will last for years.

CARE

Dismantle it after use. The filter assembly separates from the rod, which is the
only way to get old oils out of the mesh properly — a press that is never taken
apart starts tasting stale within weeks, and people blame the coffee.

Wash the carafe with warm water and mild soap, and let the glass reach room
temperature before pouring hot water into it or cold water onto it. Never put it
on a flame or a stovetop, and never in a microwave with the steel lid on.

A NAME ON IT

If this is a gift, ask us before you order about engraving a name or a date on the
steel lid disc. It depends on the thickness of that particular part, so we will
confirm rather than promise.

Please note

Dismantle and wash the filter assembly after every use — old oils in the mesh are
what make a press taste stale. Warm water and mild soap only. Let the glass reach
room temperature before adding very hot or very cold water. Never place on a
stovetop, hotplate or open flame. Never microwave with the steel lid or plunger
fitted. Do not knock the carafe against steel sinks or hard counters — there is no
protective frame around the glass. Dry the steel parts to avoid water marks.
