The clock operates on a pre-programmed LED matrix circuit that maps every five-minute interval in a 12-hour cycle to a specific set of letter positions on the grid. The letter grid contains all the words required to express any time in natural English:

Fixed starters: IT IS — always illuminated, opening every time statement the way a sentence begins.

Minute words: FIVE, TEN, QUARTER, TWENTY, TWENTY FIVE, HALF, THIRTY, FORTY, FORTY FIVE, FIFTY, FIFTY FIVE
Position words: MINUTES, PAST, TO

Hour words: ONE, TWO, THREE, FOUR, FIVE, SIX, SEVEN, EIGHT, NINE, TEN, ELEVEN, TWELVE
Closing: O'CLOCK

The engineering of fitting all these words into a 20 × 20 grid while maintaining readability — with the unused letters forming a coherent background texture rather than visual noise — is the product's defining design achievement.
