Look at what happens to a Diwali hamper after Diwali. The sweets go in three days. The dry fruit lasts a fortnight. And the box — the rigid, ribboned, foil-stamped box that a third of the price paid for — is flattened and thrown out by the first week of November. Every year, in every office, at scale.

THE BASKET

An open hand-woven basket, oval, with a braided rope rim, an openwork lattice band around the upper wall, two dark toggle fittings set into the rim and a copper satin ribbon tied around it. It is deep enough to stand the potlis and jars upright and shallow enough to see everything at once, which is the whole point of an open presentation.

It is the reason this hamper is not a box, and it is the part worth keeping. Emptied, it takes fruit on a counter, keys and post by the door, wool and needles beside a chair, or nothing at all. Wipe it with a dry cloth; keep it out of standing water and out of long direct sun, which is what dries and fades any natural fibre.

THE DRY FRUIT

Three jute drawstring potlis, 50g each — cashews, almonds and pistachios — 150g in total. The potlis are open-weave with cord ties and a festive printed face, and they re-close, so what is not eaten on the night goes back in the bag rather than into a bowl with clingfilm over it.

THE COOKIES

Two clear screw-lid jars, 100g each, 200g in total. Almond cookies — pale, short and buttery. Coffee walnut cookies — darker, with the bitterness that stops a sweet box from being only sweet. Both jars re-seal, which matters more than it sounds in a humid Indian October.

THE JASMINE CANDLE

Hand-poured, single wick, in a hexagonal glass jar with a woven jute cap that stays with the jar between burns. Jasmine is the season's flower — it is what the garlands and the puja thali smell of — so this is a fragrance chosen for the festival rather than dropped into it.

Trim the wick to about five millimetres before each burn and let the first burn run long enough for the melt pool to reach the edge of the glass; that is what stops a candle tunnelling down the middle and wasting half its wax. Never leave it burning unattended, and keep it away from curtains, children and pets.

THE CHAI

Two roasted chai sachets, each stated on the pack as a single cup. A roasted blend is deeper and less floral than a standard masala chai, and it takes milk well.

THE CARD

A printed Diwali card, and your own message goes on it. On a corporate run your logo prints alongside the message, which makes the card the piece of personalisation that stays in the basket rather than a name lasered onto something.

Returns
